How To First-Foot

Here's how to use your kit to bring luck and good cheer in the New Year:

Choose your First-Footer: Traditionally, a person with dark-hair is chosen, but if you are not trying to harken back to a concern about Vikings invading, the most important thing is that you have someone who brings good energy and wishes!

Prepare your gifts: (Your kit contains versions of these symbolic items): Coin for prosperity, Bread for sustenance, Salt for flavor, Coal or wood for warmth, Evergreen for long life and Whiskey for cheer.
Wait for the bells: Gather outside your home just before midnight.
First-Footer enters: As the clock strikes twelve, the chosen person steps across the threshold…
Warm greetings: The First-Footer offers good wishes for the New Year to the household.
Everyone enters: The rest of the party follows, sharing hugs and greetings.
Enjoy a wee dram! Toast to the start of a lucky and joyful year together!

Most importantly, have fun with it! First-footing is about bringing loved ones together and welcoming the New Year with hope and optimism. Adapt the tradition to suit your setting and enjoy the warmth and connection it brings.
